Perth [Australia], February 10 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar embarked on a two-day visit to Perth, Australia, where he visited Sailani Avenue and had the opportunity to meet with Indian community leaders and veterans. Sailani Avenue holds special significance as it is named after Nain Singh Sailani, an Indian-origin soldier who was honored in Australia.

Private Nain Singh Sailani was one of the twelve known Anzacs from the Indian community who enlisted with the Australian Imperial Forces in 1916. Sadly, he was one of two soldiers who lost their lives during the Belgian campaign.

Expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome and acknowledging the importance of Sailani Avenue, the EAM took to social media, stating, Visited Sailani Avenue in Perth. Named after Nain Singh Sailani, an Indian-origin soldier honored in Australia. Glad to meet some of our veterans and Indian community leaders there. The visit to Sailani Avenue showcased India’s deep appreciation for the contributions and sacrifices made by Indian-origin soldiers in Australia.

In addition to this visit, Jaishankar also held discussions with Penny Wong, his Australian counterpart, as part of the 7th Indian Ocean Conference. The conference, held annually by the Ministry of External Affairs in association with the India Foundation, brought together leaders and delegates to focus on important regional issues. During the meeting, the two ministers discussed India-Australia ties, the Indian Ocean architecture, and their shared interests in the Indo-Pacific.

The 7th Indian Ocean Conference, organized in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia, the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore, and the Perth-US Asia Centre, is themed Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean. This high-profile gathering aims to address critical regional matters and find sustainable solutions.

The visit to Sailani Avenue and the discussions at the Indian Ocean Conference highlight the growing partnership between India and Australia. Both nations are committed to strengthening ties, promoting stability, and ensuring the sustainability of the Indian Ocean region.

Jaishankar’s visit to Perth serves as a testament to the importance India places on its relations with Australia and the Indian community residing in the country. The interactions with veterans and community leaders not only provide a sense of appreciation and respect but also reaffirm the bond between the two nations.

As the External Affairs Minister’s visit to Australia continues, it is expected that more fruitful discussions and engagements will take place, further cementing the relationship and paving the way for stronger cooperation in the future.
