Indian Boxer Nikhat Zareen Clinches Gold at Women’s World Boxing Championship in Istanbul

Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen made her mark at the Women’s World Boxing Championship in Istanbul, Turkey by winning the gold medal in the 52kg category. In the final, she defeated Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the fly-weight division. This victory has catapulted her into the exclusive group of only five Indian women boxers who have won gold at the World Championships.

Zareen, a former junior youth world champion, showcased her brilliance and skills in the ring. The judges scored the bout in her favor, with a unanimous decision of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, and 29-28. Her strategic use of technical acumen, footwork, and powerful punches allowed her to outwit her nimble-footed opponent.

The 25-year-old Indian started the match on a high note, landing far more punches than her Thai counterpart in the first round. Although the second round was more closely contested, Jitpong managed to clinch it 3-2. However, Nikhat remained determined to secure victory. In the final round, she gave it her all and sealed the win with a dominant performance, earning a 5-0 unanimous decision.

Nikhat Zareen joins the esteemed company of Indian boxing legends Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL, and Lekha KC, who have previously won gold at the World Championships. Her success also signifies India’s first gold medal at the prestigious event since Mary Kom’s triumph in 2018.

Zareen’s journey to the gold was impressive. She demonstrated her skill and finesse throughout the competition. In the opening round, she hit sharp punches and established her dominance early on. Even in the face of a counter-attacking display from her opponent in the second round, Nikhat remained composed and in control.

With this victory, Nikhat Zareen has not only achieved her dream of winning a medal at the Worlds but has become a source of inspiration for aspiring boxers in India. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) expressed its pride in the performance of the Indian boxers and congratulated Nikhat, as well as bronze medal winners Parveen and Manisha, along with the coaches and support staff.

India’s overall medal tally at the Women’s World Boxing Championship now stands at 39, including 10 gold, eight silver, and 21 bronze medals over the course of 12 editions. This places India as the third-highest medal-winning country after Russia and China.

The competition in Istanbul witnessed the participation of 310 boxers from 73 countries. The Indian contingent showed its strength with eight boxers reaching the quarter-finals, which tied for the highest number alongside Turkey.

Nikhat Zareen’s achievement is a testament to her dedication, skills, and hard work. As she joins the ranks of Indian boxing champions, her success will surely inspire future generations of Indian boxers. With her gold medal win, she has carved her name in the history books of women’s boxing.
