A three-way accident involving two passenger trains and a goods train on June 2 has claimed the lives of over 275 people, with more than 1,000 injured in Balasore, on the east coast of India. The death toll remains contested, with some sources reporting up to 288 deceased. A change in electronic interlocking on the train system is thought to have caused the accident, according to India’s Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw. The accident occurred away from urban centres, complicating rescue efforts. Emergency services were marshalled from outlying areas, including the civil defence and homeguard. Of the injuries sustained, over 400 are still being treated for their injuries.
