India is set to improve its cyclone forecasting with new supercomputers, high-resolution radar systems and automated weather observatories, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As part of its overhaul, the weather service plans to deploy 62 radars, up from 37, and increase the speed of its supercomputers to 30 petaflops. It will also increase the number of automated weather observatories and rain gauges. IMD director-general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra hailed India’s early warning systems, which, he said, had helped reduce casualties from tropical storms to barely a few people from thousands in the 1990s.
