India is reportedly set to acquire a new aircraft carrier worth $5 billion in an effort to counter China’s growing naval presence in the Indian Ocean region. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Defence Acquisition Council is expected to approve the acquisition of the carrier on Friday. The new carrier, capable of accommodating 28 fighter jets and helicopters and displacing 45,000 tons of water, will be equipped with French Rafale jets. This addition to India’s fleet comes after the successful deployment of its first homemade carrier, INS Vikrant, last year. With China’s significant naval force of 370 ships and submarines, India aims to strengthen its position in the region by forming a three-carrier battle group. As the Indian Ocean becomes increasingly militarized, India plans to have 160 warships by 2030 and 175 by 2035. The country is also investing in upgraded runway facilities at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to enhance maritime surveillance capabilities. The acquisition of the new carrier demonstrates India’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the Indian Ocean, reflecting the region’s heightened strategic importance.
