An investigation into India’s worst rail crash in two decades that killed at least 288 people is focusing on suspected manual bypassing of an automated signalling system, three Indian Railways sources have said. They believe railway workers bypassed the system to get around signalling hurdles caused by a malfunctioning barrier used to stop road traffic at a nearby rail-road intersection. The Indian and international media have previously suggested a potential malfunction in the automated signalling system may have led to the crash. The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) has not yet made any comment.
