India’s national electricity plan (NEP) has revealed that the country will need to increase its coal-fired power capacity to 259.6GW by the fiscal year ending March 2032. This is up from 211.9GW currently, as India anticipates a peak electricity demand of 2473.8TWh. It has set projections of raising coal-fired capacity to 235.1GW by 2026-27 and 259.6GW by 2031-32. The NEP envisages battery energy storage capacity to rise to 47.24GW by 2031-32 while it aims for installed renewable capacity to reach 500GW by 2030. It also predicts increases in non-fossil-based capacity, including a share for electric vehicles of 30% by 2030.
