Indian and Anatolian Sufism have multiple cultural and historical connections, according to a recent webinar organized by the Indo Islamic Heritage Center. The Gaddi Nasheen of Dargah Khwaja Saheb Ajmer Shareef, and Prof Dr S Liyaqat Moini, Director of IIHC, discussed the similarities between the regions, indicating that mystical branch of Islam, Sufism, developed distinct characteristics in each area. Main speaker Issa Golitzen Farajaje, a US Sufi scholar based in Turkey, noted that while Indian and Anatolian Sufism have different regional flavours and practices, they share spiritual lineages, cultural exchange, and teachings from figures such as Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi and the Chishti saints. He added that Rumi’s teachings and poetry have had a significant influence on Sufism in India and Turkey alike. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and his disciple Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki, who spread the Chishti order in India, also influenced Sufi traditions in Anatolia.
