India has put a hold on any approvals for new coal power plants for the next five years, according to an updated national electricity plan. The decision is designed to boost renewable energy use and as part of India’s plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2070. The Central Electricity Authority, which is responsible for India’s electricity planning, originally envisaged almost 8,000 MW of new coal capacity by 2027, but the latest strategy proposes the deployment of over 8,600 MW of battery energy storage systems instead. The plan has been welcomed by experts in the country who have noted the benefits of using renewables to meet greater electricity demand during hotter weather.Â
