India has reaffirmed its commitment to the capacity building and capability development of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Speaking at a seminar organised by the Indian High Commission in Colombo, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane described Sri Lanka as India’s priority partner and called for enhanced collaboration to tackle common security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region such as terrorism, piracy, and drug trafficking. Mr Aramane also stated that India’s defence sector is at the cusp of a major revolution and is focused on establishing a robust R&D and indigenous manufacturing ecosystem while fostering innovation and entrepreneurship under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. Sri Lanka is one of India’s major development partners, and the government of India has extended a Defence Line of Credit worth US$150m to Sri Lanka to support its defence capabilities. Out of this, US$100m has been utilised to date.
