India Contributes $1 Million to Promote Hindi Language at the United Nations

India has made a significant contribution of $1 million to the United Nations (UN) as part of an initiative to promote the usage of the Hindi language within the global organization. The cheque was presented by India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, to Melissa Fleming, the Under Secretary General of the UN Department of Global Communications.

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations took to Twitter to announce the investment, stating, Investing in linguistic inclusivity! PR @ruchirakamboj handed a cheque of $1,000,000 to USG @MelissaFleming towards expanding the usage of #Hindi in @UN. With the Hindi@UN project, we are breaking barriers & enhancing public outreach. Kamboj also tweeted about the contribution, emphasizing that it is a step towards fostering inclusive dialogue and understanding.

Ambassador Kamboj praised the UN’s efforts to mainstream and consolidate news and multimedia content in Hindi, adding that these efforts have been greatly appreciated not only in India but also in countries with a Hindi-speaking population. She further pledged the Government of India’s commitment to promoting the use of Hindi in the UN for the purpose of inclusive communication. The press statement also highlighted India’s satisfaction in partnering with the United Nations.

Launched in 2018, the Hindi@UN project is a collaborative effort between the UN Department of Public Information and the UN with the aim of enhancing public outreach in Hindi and increasing awareness about global issues among millions of Hindi-speaking individuals worldwide. Hindi UN News is disseminated through various platforms including the UN News website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and a weekly audio bulletin.

The project has witnessed a positive response with 50,000 followers on Twitter, 29,000 on Instagram, and 15,000 on Facebook. The Hindi UN News website, which generates approximately 1.3 million annual impressions, has achieved a spot among the top ten in internet search engines.

India’s contribution not only highlights its commitment to promoting cultural and linguistic diversity but also supports the UN’s goal of fostering inclusive communication. By investing in the expansion of Hindi language usage, India aims to break down barriers and enhance public outreach on global issues. This collaboration between India and the UN exemplifies a shared commitment to fostering understanding and dialogue among nations.

The multi-platform approach of the Hindi@UN project allows the UN to effectively engage with Hindi-speaking populations around the world, ensuring greater inclusivity and raising awareness about critical global matters. Through this initiative, the UN aims to bridge the language gap and make its content accessible to a wider audience, ultimately promoting a more globally informed and involved citizenry.

By making this substantial contribution, India has demonstrated its dedication to promoting linguistic inclusivity and fostering dialogue on a global scale. The impact of this investment will go beyond language promotion and strengthen the UN’s efforts to reach a wider audience, ensuring that Hindi-speaking populations are well-informed about global issues and have a stronger voice on the international stage.

Overall, the contribution of $1 million from India to promote the Hindi language at the United Nations underscores the importance of linguistic inclusivity and serves as a meaningful step towards fostering greater understanding and dialogue among nations.
