India Requests Reduction in Canadian Diplomatic Presence Amid Growing Tensions
India has formally asked Canada to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country following what it describes as interference by Canadian diplomats in Indian affairs. The move comes as tensions between the two nations continue to escalate over the recent killing of a Khalistani terrorist.
According to a statement from the Indian government, the request for downsizing was made in order to achieve parity in diplomatic presence, as Canada currently has a larger number of diplomats in India compared to India’s presence in Canada. The foreign ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, stated that he anticipates a reduction in Canadian diplomatic personnel as a result.
Speaking on the matter, Bagchi further emphasized that Canadian diplomatic interference in Indian internal affairs was a contributing factor to the request for downsizing. The suspension of visa services in Canada was also announced in response to security threats and the disruption of officials’ work.
