India and the US are joining forces to develop small modular reactor technologies for the domestic and export markets, according to a joint statement between the two countries. Small modular reactors are factory-made, compact reactors with less than 300 MW capacity. Major nuclear power equipment manufacturers, such as Russia’s Rosatom, French company EDF, and the US-based NuScale Energy, are now looking at this sector. Advocates believe small reactors have shorter gestation periods, longer power generation periods, and lower risks, making them more attractive to global nuclear power plant makers. India and the US are also negotiating for construction of six nuclear reactors in India, with the US reaffirming its support for India’s membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
