UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced the formation of an independent panel to review and assess allegations against the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The agency has faced accusations from Israel that 12 of its staff members were involved in a Hamas attack that occurred in October. The review will be led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna and supported by three research organizations. The group will evaluate the mechanisms and procedures in place at UNRWA to ensure neutrality and address allegations of breaches. The review is expected to submit an interim report in late March and a final report in late April, which will be made public. A separate investigation by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services is also ongoing. Israel has welcomed the formation of the review group, with Foreign Minister Israel Katz emphasizing the need to bring the truth to light. The Israeli government is reportedly exploring alternatives to UNRWA in the Gaza Strip.
