As summer vacation comes to an end and children head back to school, health experts are warning of an expected increase in seasonal illnesses. The return to regular classroom routines often leads to a spike in viral infections and other common ailments among students.

General practitioners in Northern Ireland are preparing for an influx of patients presenting with symptoms like high temperatures, sniffles, and sore throats. Dr. Alan Stout, a GP partner at Greenway Practice in east Belfast and chair of the British Medical Association‘s GP committee in Northern Ireland, explains that the second or third week of September consistently sees a rise in these cases.

The close proximity of children in school facilitates the spread of infections. A single infected child can quickly transmit an illness throughout the class and even the entire school. Dr. Stout highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of falling ill.

While most of these seasonal illnesses are self-limiting and can be managed with home remedies such as staying hydrated and taking over-the-counter pain relievers, parents should be vigilant for signs that their child’s condition is worsening. Extreme lethargy, refusal to drink fluids, or a sudden spike in temperature may indicate the need for medical attention.

It is essential for parents to be aware of the potential increase in bugs and infections during this time and to take necessary precautions. Regular handwashing, practicing good respiratory hygiene, and ensuring a healthy diet and exercise routine can all contribute to maintaining overall well-being.

As children navigate their way back to the classrooms, it is important for parents and healthcare professionals to work together to minimize the impact of seasonal illnesses and keep students healthy. By remaining attentive to symptoms, seeking medical attention when necessary, and promoting preventive measures, the return to school can be a smoother and healthier experience for everyone involved.
