WE ARE NOW AT THE DAWN OF A NEW AGE FOR INTELLIGENCE, SAYS GLOBAL AI EXPERT AT QATAR FOUNDATION’S 2023 WISE SUMMIT

Referring to the exponential rate at which the capabilities of AI systems are advancing, Shick emphasized, In this new age of intelligence – a revolution – the default is going to be a symbiotic relationship with machine and human working together.

The recently concluded World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) brought together experts, educators, and innovators from around the world to discuss the groundbreaking role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of education. The two-day summit, hosted by Qatar Foundation, aimed to spark conversations and explore the safe, ethical, and effective adoption of AI in global education systems.

One of the key topics at the summit was the increasing influence of AI in combating disinformation and promoting critical thinking. Dr. Marc Owen Jones, Associate Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, led a masterclass on ‘Critical Thinking in the Digital Age: AI, Information Literacy, and the Battle Against Disinformation.’ Dr. Jones discussed the challenges faced by education systems in identifying and countering AI-generated propaganda, offering valuable insights on how to tackle this issue.

Highlighting the collective impact of AI applications, the panel on ‘AI for Common Good’ delved into its role in research, education, policy, philanthropy, and media. Her Excellency Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education, emphasized Qatar’s efforts to integrate AI into its education system. She stated, Qatar is one of the early adopters of a national K-12 AI curriculum, preparing students for a workforce that increasingly involves AI technologies and skills.

During the closing ceremony, Conrad Wolfram, Co-founder and CEO of The Wolfram Group, delivered a keynote speech on the importance of computational thinking in the age of AI. Wolfram emphasized the interlink between mathematics, computational methods, critical thinking, and creativity skills. He advocated for a shift towards prioritizing the utilization of computational tools in education systems to address real-world challenges effectively.

The summit gathered nearly 7000 stakeholders in education, including experts, innovators, and young trailblazers. The event fostered crucial discussions on the potential of AI in education and highlighted the need for a balanced approach that combines human intelligence with machine capabilities.

The integration of AI in education holds great promise for the future, but it also brings forth important considerations, such as ethics, privacy, and the need for continuous adaptation in an ever-evolving technological landscape. The WISE Summit served as a platform for experts and educators to collaborate and shed light on the best practices, challenges, and opportunities in this emerging field.

As the world embraces this new age of intelligence, it becomes vital for educational institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders to work together in harnessing the potential of AI while safeguarding the values of critical thinking, creativity, and human collaboration.
