IMD issues moderate rain and thunderstorm warnings for 12 districts in Tamil Nadu for next three hours
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], November 30 – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued moderate rain and thunderstorm warnings for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Pudukottai, and 12 other districts in Tamil Nadu for the next three hours.
The Kanchipuram District administration has announced an increase in the discharge of water from Chembarambakkam Lake from 2500 cusecs to 6000 cusecs starting from 8 a.m. on Thursday.
The continuous overnight rainfall in the North Chennai area has resulted in the accumulation of rainwater in the Perambur Loco Railway Station tunnel, making it inaccessible to the public. Similarly, the railway tunnel on the Vyasarpadi Perambur highway has also been blocked due to waterlogging, causing severe difficulties for commuting individuals.
In the North Chennai area, waterlogging at Vyasarpadi Stephenson Road has disrupted the daily routine of the local residents.
Yesterday, heavy rainfall was reported in various parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The coastal districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Ramanathapuram, experienced the heaviest rainfall. Avadi in Tiruvallur district recorded the highest rainfall of 19 cm.
Several areas were heavily affected by rain, including Zone 06 D65 Kolathur and Zone 06 T.V.K Nagar in Chennai, as well as Ponneri in Tiruvallur district, all of which received 15 cm of rain. Ambattur in Chennai, Zone 08 Malar Colony in Chennai, and Thalaignayer in Nagapattinam district recorded 14 cm of rain each. Cholavaram in Tiruvallur district and Zone 12 Alandhur in Chennai recorded 13 cm of rain.
Due to the continuous downpour, schools in Chennai remain closed. Waterlogging and heavy traffic have been reported in various parts of the city, severely disrupting normal life. The Sholinganallur area witnessed long traffic queues as vehicles moved slowly, with some people taking over an hour to cover a short distance. Severe waterlogging was observed in areas like Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur.
In view of the impending cyclone warning issued by the IMD, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been put on standby in Arakkonam town.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai and its neighboring districts on December 2 and 3, signaling the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
As the rain continues to pour in Tamil Nadu, residents and authorities are working together to manage the impact of severe weather conditions. The state government will closely monitor the situation and take necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the people.
