Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coast in Gujarat due to the East Central Arabian Sea Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) Biparjoy. IMD stated that the cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch Coast was classified as a yellow message. ESCS Biparjoy was detected close to the latitude of 18.6N and longitude of 67.7E on June 11, and the storm is likely to cross between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) by noon on June 15.
Meanwhile, the IMD has warned that several parts of India are likely to experience severe heatwave conditions over the next three days. Odisha and certain areas in the state may face temperatures that are 4-6 degrees Celsius above normal. IMD Scientist Umashankar Das stated that an orange warning has been issued in this regard. “We have issued an Orange warning. This condition will continue until June 13. We are expecting that afterward, there will be a slight fall in temperature. So, heatwave conditions will no more prevail in various districts.”
IMD Scientist Naresh Kumar mentioned that heatwave conditions are currently present in East India, especially in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, where the IMD issued an orange alert. The hot weather and heatwave conditions are likely to continue for the next few weeks.
As parts of India grapple with severe heatwave conditions, it is crucial to take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. Citizens are advised to stay hydrated and avoid going out in the sun between 11 AM to 4 PM. It is also advisable to take frequent breaks while working outside, wear loose and light-colored clothing, and use sunscreen to protect the skin.
