The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police recently arrested three individuals for their involvement in operating an illegal SIM box network across four locations in Kolkata. The STF launched the operation based on specific information and confiscated 29 SIM boxes, 604 SIM cards belonging to BSNL and Airtel, and multiple routers from the suspects. Out of the 29 SIM boxes recovered, 7 were from Karaya PS, 14 from Tala PS, 3 from Purba Jadavpur PS, and 5 from Ekbalpur.
The suspects have now been identified as Goutam Saha, Golum Moinuddin Warsi, and Md Muzaffar Hossain. The confiscated devices were used for the illegal diversion of international calls, causing both revenue loss and potential security threats that could be exploited by anti-nationals.
The STF has informed that the arrested individuals were involved in running a major Simbox network that operated across four different areas in Kolkata. The operation was launched under Karaya, Tala, Purba Jadavpur, and Ekbalpur Police Station (PS) jurisdictions. Further investigation is underway to uncover any other individuals involved in the illegal business.
Illegal SIM box networks cause a significant loss to the government, disrupting the revenue that could have been generated for national development. Moreover, it poses a threat to national security as it can be exploited to carry out illegal activities. The STF Kolkata Police is targeting such criminal activities and has been working round the clock to identify and crack down on illegal activities such as this.
The team has urged individuals to avoid purchasing SIM cards from unverified sources, and the police have requested telecom companies to enhance their verification process, which will help curb such illegal practices.
