Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT Madras) has recently launched 15 Centres of Excellence under the Union government’s Institute of Eminence scheme. The aim of these Centres is to empower higher education institutions and become world-class teaching and research establishments. The research initiatives aim to develop next-generation technologies and create a significant impact in domestic and overseas markets.
IIT Madras was selected under the Institute of Eminence in 2019 and have established several research initiatives in diverse fields. Out of the 68 research initiatives across 21 technology clusters, 15 were shortlisted and granted Centre of Excellence status. The Centre of Excellence is expected to reach the top five in the world in terms of research and innovation. The facilities serve as hubs that attract talent and foster interdisciplinary collaborations. The involving of 400 faculty members would help foster innovative solutions with the aim of making an impact at home and abroad.
IIT Madras Director, V Kamakoti, commented on the launched stating, “These centres are predominantly interdisciplinary, involving faculty from more than three departments and working on niche technologies. A substantial amount of IoE funding has been invested in the development of research”.

With the launch of 15 Centres of Excellence, IIT Madras plans to become a leader in technological advancement and develop cutting-edge research solutions.
