PhD and MA students at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad staged a protest against the institution’s indifference towards fee hikes and additional charges. More than 200 students gathered outside the academic buildings to voice their concerns. Despite multiple emails sent to the administration, students claimed their requests were ignored. The protestors highlighted the incremental rise in fees each semester, with PhD scholars facing an increase from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 per semester. Additionally, students complained about various establishment fees, including hostel and mess charges, as well as charges related to sports complex establishment. The students’ council and authorities failed to address the issues raised, prompting the sit-in protest to last for over three hours. Eventually, protestors entered the academic building and pressured the Director to engage in a dialogue. The Director attributed the fee hike to fund cuts from the Ministry of Education and justified maintenance charges for facilities. The students agreed to a two-day wait suggested by the Director to find a feasible solution. It was a rare display of solidarity among the students. The article emphasizes the students’ concerns over fee hikes and additional charges, their peaceful protest, and the response from the institution.
