IIT Bombay achieves significant milestone, ranking in top 150 globally in QS world ranking

IIT Bombay, one of India’s leading educational institutions, has achieved a significant milestone by breaking into the top 150 universities worldwide in the latest edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking. The announcement was made in an official statement released by IIT Bombay.

Nunzio Quacquarelli, the Founder and CEO of QS, congratulated IIT Bombay for securing its highest-ever rank and noted that they had evaluated 2900 institutions for this year’s ranking, with 45 Indian universities making the list. This marks a remarkable 297% increase in the number of Indian universities included in the rankings over the past nine years.

The QS World University Rankings is an annual publication that ranks universities globally in both overall and subject-specific categories. In 2016, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore achieved its highest rank with a position of 147.

According to the official statement, IIT Bombay is ranked first in India and has made a significant leap from its 177th position last year to 149th this year in the QS World University Rankings. The institution’s overall score is 51.7 out of 100. This is the first time IIT Bombay has entered the top 150 in the QS rankings, representing a remarkable improvement of 23 places compared to 2023.

The QS ranking system evaluates universities based on nine parameters, with Employer Reputation being the strongest factor for IIT Bombay, securing a global rank of 69. The institute scored 81.9 in employer reputation, 73.1 in citation per faculty, 55.5 in academic reputation, 47.4 in employment outcome, 54.9 in sustainability, 18.9 in faculty-student ratio, 4.7 in international faculty, 8.5 in international research network, and 1.4 in international students. Each score is out of a maximum of 100 points.

The Chief of QS also congratulated Chandigarh University for achieving a rank of 780, making it the top-performing Indian private university. He expressed optimism that Indian universities would continue to improve their performance in the coming years.
