The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal has achieved a remarkable feat by securing fourth place in the academic category and sixth place overall in the Nature Index Rankings 2023. Moreover, IISER Bhopal has attained the top position among all IISERs across the country. The institute had previously ranked tenth in the academic category and 13th in the overall category. The rankings are based on the Nature Index data from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022.

Professor Siva Umapathy, Director of IISER Bhopal, expressed his happiness at the progress the institute has made over the years. He said that IISER Bhopal aimed to create a collaborative research ecosystem by working with academic and industry leaders. The improved ranking was a result of the collective efforts put in by the faculty, students, and staff in research, teaching, and outreach.

The Nature Index is a competitive and prestigious metric closely watched around the world to ascertain the performance of institutions and countries in scientific research. Institutions ranked high in the index are known for their high level of performance in research on a global scale. The Nature Index 2023 Annual Tables is the first ranking to track output in high-quality medical journals in addition to four natural-science categories.

Moreover, IISER Bhopal has been continuously consolidating its position in National and International rankings, securing the 60th place in the NIRF Ranking 2023 (National Institutional Ranking Framework). The institute has secured rank 281-290 in the overall category of QS Asia Ranking 2023. The institute has also been ranked 57th (National Rank, out of 70 in the 1500 Institutes) in the Times Higher Education 2023 World Ranking.

Established by the Ministry of Education (then Ministry of Human Resource & Development), Government of India, in 2008, IISER Bhopal is the youngest of the first five IISERs. In a decade, the institute has received several distinctions and carved out a unique position in the national and international arena. It has a vision to provide high-quality education to students and contribute to society through its research. Additionally, IISER Bhopal is the first IISER to have been declared by the Ministry of Education for project completion.

This achievement will encourage the institute to move forward in conducting and encouraging more research on a global scale and pave the way for other institutes to emulate the example set by IISER Bhopal.
