Indore (Madhya Pradesh): IIM Indore, in collaboration with the district administration of Lucknow, has released a groundbreaking report aimed at revolutionizing the Chikankari sector and empowering artisans, while driving socio-economic growth. Titled ‘Revolutionising Chikankari: IIM Indore’s Report Promises To Boost Chikankari, Empowering Artisans And Driving Socio-Economic Growth’, the report unveils critical insights into the industry and proposes innovative measures to support its development.
Led by Prof Himanshu Rai, Director of IIM Indore, the research team conducted an extensive study from July 2023 to December 2023, delving into the intricate production processes and diverse experiences of stakeholders associated with Chikankari. The report highlights the vital role played by artists, artisans, machinery experts, and other stakeholders in the success and growth of the Chikankari sector.
One of the key recommendations made by Prof Rai is the establishment of a federation to register and empower artisans while providing a unified representation before the government. This initiative aims to reduce information asymmetry and promote collaboration among different groups of artisans and organizations.
Prof Rai also emphasizes the need for comprehensive recognition of the artisans’ efforts, acknowledging their dedication as instrumental in the significant increase in income and employment opportunities within the district. Importantly, the report emphasizes the importance of preserving the heritage of handmade craftsmanship and bridging the gap between traditional handmade work and mechanized production.
The Lucknow administration commended IIM Indore for their exceptional efforts and praised the report’s comprehensive nature. Lucknow DM Suryapal Gangwar acknowledged that the research has shed light on often-overlooked complexities within the Chikankari sector.
