Investigation Launched into Identity Theft Reports in Kedah State Elections
The Kedah state elections have been marred by reports of identity theft, prompting the police to initiate an investigation. Three separate incidents have been reported, with voters claiming that their names and identity cards were used by others to cast votes on their behalf. Kedah police chief Fisol Salleh confirmed that two reports were filed in the Kulim district, while the third report originated from the Kuala Muda district.
In the first case, a woman arrived at a polling station located in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) in Kulim, only to be informed by an Election Commission (EC) official that she had already voted. Similarly, in the second case registered in Kulim, a male voter encountered the same issue. The third incident, which took place in Kuala Muda, involved another female voter. Recognizing the seriousness of these claims, the police have launched an investigation under Section 7 of the Election Offences Act 1954.
Additional concerns surrounding the state elections have recently surfaced on social media. One video, which went viral, captured an incident at a polling station in Pendang. The footage showcased a woman expressing dissatisfaction with an EC officer’s alleged failure to adequately assist her disabled husband during the voting process. However, the police have not yet received any formal complaints regarding this incident.
Another viral video claimed to depict a fleet of buses transporting phantom voters in the Kuala Muda district. Kedah police chief Fisol Salleh refuted these allegations, clarifying that the buses were in fact intended to transport police personnel, ensuring the smooth running of the state elections. As misinformation can easily spread during such crucial times, it is important for the public to remain vigilant and rely on verified sources for accurate information.
Fisol Salleh also urged political party supporters in Kedah to refrain from organizing convoys from this afternoon until tonight in order to avoid traffic congestion. He emphasized the need for celebrations to be conducted responsibly and without causing inconvenience or disrupting law and order.
As the investigation into the identity theft reports unfolds, it is crucial to prioritize the integrity and fairness of the electoral process. The authorities must address these concerns promptly to ensure that the voices of Kedah’s voters are heard and that transparency prevails.
