India’s Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur, has called for absolute accountability from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) regarding the controversy surrounding Christopher Nolan’s film, ‘Oppenheimer.’ The movie, featuring Cillian Murphy, has faced criticism for a scene that includes a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a holy scripture for Hindus. The depiction has sparked outrage online, with many accusing Nolan of hurting religious sentiments.

Minister Thakur has taken a firm stance on the matter, directing the filmmakers to remove the controversial scene promptly. Additionally, he has warned that strict action will be taken against CBFC members responsible for approving the screening of the film. Thakur expressed disappointment in the board’s failure to protect public interests, emphasizing the importance of accountability.

The Indian government has been actively working to uphold public sentiments and promote responsible content in the film industry. The call for accountability from the CBFC reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining a robust and responsible film certification process.

Uday Mahurkar, the Information Commissioner of the Union government and founder of Save Culture, Save India, has also criticized the scene in ‘Oppenheimer.’ Mahurkar labeled it an insult to Hinduism and called on Nolan to remove the offensive content. He warned that if the scene is not removed, appropriate action will be taken.

Mahurkar highlighted the scene as a direct assault on Hindu beliefs and urged the film’s makers to respect the dignity of the revered book and eliminate the controversial content worldwide. He emphasized that any disregard for this appeal would be seen as a deliberate assault on Indian civilization. Mahurkar demanded an urgent investigation by top officials and ministers, including Minister Anurag Thakur.

‘Oppenheimer’ is a biopic set during World War II, following the story of Robert J Oppenheimer, known as the Father of the Atomic Bomb. The film features a star-studded cast including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, and Jack Quaid. It was released in theaters on July 21.

The controversy surrounding the scene in ‘Oppenheimer’ highlights the delicate balance between artistic expression and religious sensitivities. As the government seeks accountability from the CBFC, it reinforces its commitment to preserving public sentiment and responsible content in the Indian film industry.
