Mayor of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (HMC), Kashif Ali Shoro, expressed his gratitude to the citizens for electing representatives of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the recent local government elections in Hyderabad. In a press conference held at the Hyderabad Press Club, Shoro acknowledged the PPP’s victory in 113 out of 160 Union Committees in the HMC.
As newly elected Mayor, Shoro promised to initiate development projects in Hyderabad, including the construction of new filtration plants, roads, and drainage networks. He said he would keep all political stakeholders of Hyderabad informed while making decisions related to the HMC’s development.
Although he refrained from commenting on the HMC’s past performance, Shoro assured stakeholders that he would work towards forming a collective effort between all parties. He was accompanied by the Deputy Mayor, Saghir Qureshi, who was also present at the occasion.
Shoro’s victory comes as a moment of pride for the PPP, who stands as one of Pakistan’s major political parties after being founded in 1967. The party has a stronghold in rural Sindh, where Hyderabad is located.
The 2023 LG elections marked the third-highest voter turnout, with a total of 33.51% turnout in Sindh, where Karachi and Hyderabad witnessed the highest turnout. The elections were initially scheduled for 2020 but were postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Despite initial delays and disputes, the elections took place with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s democratic evolution.
Shoro’s vow to work with all stakeholders for the development of the city is a promising gesture for the citizens of Hyderabad in the years ahead.
