Husband and In-laws Arrested for Falsifying Wife’s Suicide as Murder Charges in Maharashtra

A woman’s husband and in-laws were arrested for killing her and trying to pass off her death as suicide in the Akola district of Maharashtra, India. The 32-year-old victim, Jaya Gopal Patond, was reportedly killed because she had refused to work in the field. Her husband, Gopal Sadhan Patond, and his parents claimed that she died by suicide, but an autopsy revealed that she was strangled to death. The accused later confessed to the crime and were charged under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The police reported that Jaya and Gopal had been engaged in frequent fights over her refusal to work in the field, which ultimately led to her murder.
