Hurricane Franklin Nearing Bermuda with Expected Tropical Storm Conditions
As Hurricane Franklin makes its approach towards Bermuda, residents are bracing themselves for the onset of tropical storm conditions tomorrow. The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the island, warning residents to expect turbulent weather within the next 36 hours.
As of 8 PM AST today, Hurricane Franklin’s center was located at latitude 31.9 North and longitude 69.4 West. Moving at a speed of 12 mph towards the northeast, the hurricane is expected to pass northwest of Bermuda tomorrow. With maximum sustained winds of 125 mph and gusts even higher, Franklin is classified as a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. However, gradual weakening is anticipated over the coming days.
Bermuda and the eastern coast of the United States are already experiencing life-threatening surf and rip currents generated by Franklin. These hazardous conditions are projected to persist in the coming days. In preparation for Wednesday morning, when tropical storm conditions are expected to reach Bermuda, outside activities are advised against due to the strong winds.
NOAA Buoy 41048, situated a few hundred miles west of Bermuda, recently recorded a sustained wind of 83 mph and a gust of 101 mph. The estimated minimum central pressure of Hurricane Franklin is 947 mb.
