Hurling for Cancer Research: Stars Unite for Thrilling Charity Match, Raising Millions

A thrilling charity match called Hurling for Cancer Research recently took place in Netwatch Cullen Park, bringing together some of the biggest names in Gaelic games and raising significant funds for the Irish Cancer Society. Organized by Jim Bolger and Davy Russell since 2011, this event has grown in popularity and become a major highlight on the annual sporting calendar.

Traditionally held in Newbridge, this year’s game was moved to Carlow due to renovations at St Conleth’s Park. The change in venue aimed to attract a new audience and closer proximity to hurling heartlands. Little did the organizers know how successful this move would be.

The match attracted a crowd of around 3,400 eager fans, causing delays as people flocked to witness the spectacle. Before the main event, young hurlers from local clubs showcased their skills, creating an atmosphere of excitement. Speculation arose when Clare star Shane O’Donnell appeared, unlisted on either squad, sparking curiosity about which team he would join.

On one side, Jim Bolger’s ‘Stars’ team included Limerick All-Ireland winners Dan Morrissey, Kyle Hayes, Cian Lynch, as well as renowned players like TJ Reid, Richie Hogan, and O’Donnell. On the opposing team, managed by Brian Cody, former star jockey Davy Russell played at corner-back alongside Con O’Callaghan, Lee Chin, and Conor Whelan.

Notable hurling legends, including Ollie Canning, Michael Fennelly, John Mullane, and Martin Storey, graced the field with their presence. The game even featured appearances from other sporting realms, with Paudie Clifford, Rachael Blackmore, Barry Geraghty, Stephen Hunt, and Seán O’Brien adding further star power. Cyril Farrell and Dickie Murphy officiated the match.

While the entertainment was centered around hurling, the underlying cause remained central – raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society. This annual event has made a significant difference, contributing to the improvements in cancer care over the years. The survival rate for cancer patients in Ireland has increased from three out of 10 to six out of 10, with hopes of reaching three out of four by 2025.

During the match, both teams displayed their intent for goals, with goalkeeper Damien Fitzhenry making exceptional saves. Noteworthy performances were seen from David Fitzgerald, who covered almost 3.5km in the first half, and Paul Murphy, recording the fastest speed at 7.6 meters per second.

In the end, Jim Bolger’s team emerged victorious with a score of 15-13 to 11-11, sealed by two late goals from Paul Scott. As organizers tallied the numbers, it was evident that the already impressive €1.3 million raised by this event had received a substantial boost.

The Hurling for Cancer Research charity match continues to captivate fans and raise essential funds for an important cause. Through the collective efforts of the sporting community, positive strides are being made in the fight against cancer. This annual event represents not only the power of sports in bringing people together but also the impact it can have on transforming lives and making a difference.
