Hundreds Held Hostage by Hamas: Empty Shabbat Table in Times Square Symbolizes Captive Lives

An installation in Times Square has drawn thousands of people to raise awareness about the hundreds of individuals believed to be held hostage by Hamas. The installation features an empty Shabbat table with 224 seats, symbolizing the hostages who are unable to observe Shabbat with their families in Gaza.

The event was organized by several Jewish organizations, aiming to bring attention to the plight of those held captive by Hamas. The chairs at the table were adorned with pictures of kidnapped Israelis and Americans, while teddy bears were placed on the ground as a powerful reminder of the missing children.

Families of the hostages attended the event, expressing their anxiety and depression over the situation. Nave Strauss, who believes his family is among the kidnapped, shared their constant state of uncertainty and the horror they face not knowing if their loved ones are alive. Hila Leumi-Levy, whose 19-year-old niece is also believed to be held captive, expressed her longing for her safe return and emphasized her niece’s young age and the life she has ahead of her.

The installation comes shortly after the release of two hostages last Friday and two more on Monday. While these developments provide a glimmer of hope, the remaining hostages and their families continue to endure immense suffering and uncertainty.

The event in Times Square coincided with a rally held by supporters of Palestinians in Gaza. The rally, which started near the New York Stock Exchange, saw participants marching through Lower Manhattan. Demonstrators gathered to protest against U.S. weapons manufacturers, hoping to exert pressure on companies associated with the Israeli war effort.

Tensions escalated during the rally, with an American flag being burned and clashes between supporters of the Palestinian people and those advocating for the release of the kidnapped Israelis. The NYPD closely monitored the situation, with multiple units following the protesters but reported no arrests.

The rally highlighted the longstanding persecution faced by Palestinians and the deep-rooted grievances that motivate their cause. The event concluded at Washington Square Park, with participants dispersing thereafter.

The installation in Times Square serves as a powerful reminder of the hundreds of lives held captive by Hamas. It symbolizes the empty seats at the Shabbat table, where families are unable to celebrate and share precious moments together. The message behind this installation is to raise awareness, evoke empathy, and ultimately work towards the safe return of all hostages, providing them with the opportunity to reunite with their families and reclaim the memories they have been robbed of.
