HS Prannoy’s Dream Run Ends in Semifinals, Settles for Bronze at World Championships

Indian shuttler HS Prannoy’s impressive run at the World Championships came to an end in the semifinals as he settled for the bronze medal. Prannoy faced a tough challenge from world number 3 Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, who eventually defeated him in three games.

The 31-year-old Prannoy had a strong start, winning the opening game and taking an early lead in the second. However, Vitidsarn, a former world junior champion, showcased his mental strength and turned the match in his favor. He displayed better defense and attack, ultimately winning the match 18-21, 21-13, 21-14 to secure a spot in the final.

Despite the loss, Prannoy’s achievement is remarkable as he becomes only the fifth Indian men’s singles player to win a medal at the World Championships. The other Indian men’s singles medalists include Kidambi Srikanth (silver), Lakshya Sen (bronze), B Sai Praneeth (bronze), and Prakash Padukone (bronze).

In addition to the men’s singles success, India has also witnessed several medal-winning performances in other categories. PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, has won five singles medals at the World Championships, including a gold in 2019. Saina Nehwal, another Indian shuttler, has claimed a silver and a bronze. Furthermore, the women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa secured a bronze in 2011, and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty clinched a bronze in 2022.

In the semifinal match, Prannoy had to face the challenge of overcoming exhaustion after his impressive victory over Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen in the previous round. His defense appeared shaky, and his attack lacked consistency during the 76-minute clash against Vitidsarn.

Prannoy started off well, utilizing his trademark straight smash and securing a significant lead. He controlled the rallies and displayed exceptional shot selection, earning a comfortable advantage in the first game. However, signs of fatigue became evident in the second game, affecting Prannoy’s performance. He made several errors, and his shots started going wide and long too often.

Vitidsarn capitalized on Prannoy’s mistakes, utilizing diagonal shots and strengthening his defense to make a comeback. The Thai shuttler displayed skillful play and took control of the match, ultimately securing victory and a place in the final.

It is noteworthy that Prannoy had previously lost to Vitidsarn in a closely contested match at the All England Championships last year. Aware of the Thai player’s defensive prowess and ability to retrieve shots, Prannoy gave his all but failed to maintain his consistency throughout the match.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on a spot in the final, Prannoy’s bronze medal achievement at the World Championships is a testament to his talent and hard work. He has made his mark in Indian badminton history, joining the ranks of esteemed medalists in the men’s singles category. India’s strong presence and consistent medal-winning performances at the World Championships reflect the country’s prowess in the sport.

As the tournament progresses, badminton enthusiasts around the world eagerly anticipate an exciting final match between Kunlavut Vitidsarn and his opponent.
