The House of Representatives has announced plans to investigate the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The decision to probe the ban came after a motion was presented by Paschal Agbodike during a parliamentary session.
NAFDAC had earlier announced a halt to the registration of beverages in small sachets and bottles starting from January 2024. However, Agbodike argued that this ban contradicts the Constitution and is against the current administration’s Economic Recovery Plan. He also emphasized that the ban negatively impacts Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.
On the contrary, lawmaker Olamide Osoba defended NAFDAC’s decision, stating that the ban is within the agency’s jurisdiction. Osoba highlighted that NAFDAC has the authority to regulate food and drugs and that the ban aligns with international best practices.
To further investigate the ban, the House has directed the Committee on NAFDAC to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.
The ban on sachet alcoholic drinks has attracted mixed reactions from various stakeholders. While some believe it is necessary to ensure public health and safety, others argue that it will have adverse effects on businesses and the economy.
Sachet alcoholic drinks have become increasingly popular in Nigeria due to their affordability and accessibility. However, concerns have been raised about their potential negative impact on public health, particularly among young people.
Critics of the ban claim that it could lead to job losses and the closure of many small businesses that rely on the production and sales of these beverages. They argue that alternative measures, such as strict regulation and enforcement of responsible drinking practices, could be more effective in addressing the issue.
Supporters of the ban argue that it will help curb excessive alcohol consumption, underage drinking, and related social problems. They believe that promoting the consumption of alcoholic beverages in larger and more regulated packaging will encourage responsible drinking habits.
The investigation by the House of Representatives aims to gather all relevant information and viewpoints to assess the impact and legitimacy of the ban. The findings of the investigation will be crucial in determining whether the ban should be upheld or reconsidered.
As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen how the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks will shape the regulatory landscape and the future of the alcoholic beverage industry in Nigeria.
