Hotel Owner Acquitted in Death of Wedding Guest in Dramatic Trial Twist

In a shocking turn of events, the case against hotel owner Nicholas Bannister has been thrown out, resulting in his acquittal in the death of Judith Wadsworth, a wedding guest. The trial, which has been ongoing at Bradford Crown Court, came to a dramatic conclusion when the prosecution suddenly announced that they no longer believed there was a realistic chance of conviction.

The incident took place on February 7, 2021, at the Coniston Hotel and Spa in Coniston Cold. Mrs. Wadsworth, a 66-year-old grandmother from Baildon, was struck by Bannister’s Range Rover as she was returning from the car park to the hotel reception. Tragically, this happened just an hour before her daughter’s wedding was set to take place.

The prosecution argued that Bannister had failed to exercise due care and attention when turning right at a T-junction onto the hotel’s access road, ultimately leading to the collision with Mrs. Wadsworth. However, in an unexpected twist, the prosecution changed their position and admitted that a conviction was no longer likely.

The judge explained to the jury that the prosecution had reviewed their stance and decided there was insufficient evidence for a conviction. The jury then unanimously declared a verdict of not guilty, officially acquitting Bannister of the charges. Consequently, the judge formally discharged him.

During the trial, it was revealed that Bannister had been unaware that he had struck Mrs. Wadsworth until he heard a terrible noise beneath his vehicle and stopped about 20 meters away. He immediately got out of the car, accompanied by employee Natasha Hobson-Shaw, who had been driving in the opposite direction. They discovered Mrs. Wadsworth in the road and rushed to offer assistance, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain.

A preliminary inquest hearing disclosed that Mrs. Wadsworth suffered fatal head and chest injuries in the collision and tragically passed away at the scene.

This sudden turn of events has left many stunned, raising questions about the prosecution’s decision to halt the trial. The case was closely watched by the public, given the tragic circumstances of Mrs. Wadsworth’s death and the potential implications for road safety.

While the trial may be over, the impact of this incident on all parties involved will undoubtedly endure. The acquittal does not diminish the loss of a beloved grandmother, leaving her family to grapple with their grief. As for Nicholas Bannister, he will have to navigate the aftermath of this harrowing experience and reconcile with the events that transpired on that fateful day in February.

As this trial concludes, it serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences that lapses in attention can have. Although justice may not have been served in the eyes of some, this case will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the individuals involved and the wider community.
