Honda Talon: Introducing the Off-Road Beast with a Dual-Clutch Transmission

Honda has introduced a powerful off-road vehicle called the Honda Talon, equipped with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This feature sets it apart from competitors like the Polaris RZR and the Can Am Maverick, which use a belt-driven continuously variable transmission (CVT). The DCT in the Talon provides a more enjoyable driving experience, allowing for better control and the option to switch to manual mode using paddle shifters.

One noteworthy aspect of the Talon is its new power steering system, which offers a quick ratio and responsive handling. It reduces bump steer when traversing rocky terrain, providing a smoother and more comfortable ride. This is particularly evident when driving over rock-bottomed rivers, where the Talon’s steering remains stable despite unseen obstacles beneath the water.

The vehicle’s capability is demonstrated by its ability to conquer various terrains, including hills that require switching between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. While most hills can be overcome in four-wheel drive high, low gear comes in handy for steep slopes. The Talon opts for a brake-based torque vectoring system in the rear and a limited-slip differential in the front, rather than mechanical lockers. While effective in rutted hills with some rocks, it would be interesting to see how the Talon performs in rock crawling situations.

The Honda Talon boasts Fox live valve shocks with Normal and Sport modes, available in both high and low gears. While the Sport mode provides better stability at higher speeds and with heavier loads, it may be challenging to discern the difference on slower trails. Nevertheless, the shocks truly shine when put to the test on a short course, demonstrating their ability to handle jumps, landings, and sharp turns without experiencing bottoming out or excessive body roll.

On the downside, the Talon falls short in terms of power compared to its competitors. With a naturally aspirated engine, it only generates 100 horsepower and may struggle when climbing steep hills. In contrast, the CanAm Maverick offers 135 horsepower, and the Polaris RZR XP base model boasts 114 horsepower while being significantly lighter.

While the Talon impresses with its performance, it does have some limitations. The tires are smaller compared to other models, and some journalists experienced flats during multiple runs. Additionally, the absence of a navigational system may deter those seeking advanced in-dash technology. However, Honda offers a Garmin nav system as an accessory, though it may not be as intuitive as the Polaris Ride Command system, which provides navigation, performance data, Bluetooth connectivity, and a backup camera.

Inside the Talon, comfy seats and a front and center gauge cluster enhance the driving experience. The doors provide ample protection from the elements and come with nets to prevent objects from entering or hands from flailing. While the center console offers storage space, cup holders, and storage nets, a USB port is notably absent, though a 12-volt outlet is available.

Despite its flaws, the Talon’s agility and capability shine through when tackling twisty trails. Honda offers a race-prepped version of the Talon with modifications to accommodate just two passengers while maintaining the longer wheelbase and increased width. The powerplant remains the same, allowing for nimble navigation through narrow trails and obstacles. Passengers are sure to enjoy the thrilling experience, even when pushed to the limits.

Starting at $25,799, the Honda Talon 1000R-4 is competitively priced compared to the base models of the Polaris RZR XP 4 and the Can Am Maverick X3 four-seater. While the Talon may lack power, its dual-clutch transmission makes it a more user-friendly option for off-road enthusiasts.

Prior to embarking on daring adventures with the Talon, it is advisable to attend a riding school to avoid reckless driving decisions. Side-by-sides are highly capable vehicles, and it’s essential to stay within one’s limits. Additionally, embracing the Tread Lightly principles and aligning oneself with riders who prioritize land stewardship is crucial. Always remember to wear safety gear and save the adult beverages for the end of the trail.
