Two people were shot on Putnam Street near Rosa Parks Boulevard in Paterson, marking the city’s eighth homicide of the year. The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23rd. The victims were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in private vehicles, but unfortunately, one of them died in the emergency room.
This incident comes after a seven-week lull in homicides in Paterson, which is significant considering the time of year. It is also only the second shooting reported in the city this month. These statistics show a decrease in gun violence compared to previous years.
In fact, this year’s eight slayings are a dramatic drop from last year, which had recorded 19 homicides by this point. Additionally, the number of reported shootings has decreased from 65 last year to 45 so far in 2023. Some credit these improvements to the involvement of state authorities.
New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin assumed control of the Paterson Police Department’s day-to-day operations in March. This action followed a series of incidents, including the fatal shooting of a local crisis intervention worker during a nearly five-hour standoff. Platkin’s intervention is seen as a step towards reformation, particularly in mental crisis policing.
The stretch of Putnam Street where the shooting occurred is no stranger to gun violence. It is located near the territory controlled by the violent 4K Bloods drug gang. Previous incidents have seen gunfire erupt in the vicinity, with multiple shots fired.
Despite the decrease in overall gun violence, it is essential to address the ongoing issue and find effective solutions. The involvement of state authorities has undoubtedly played a part in the reduction of homicides and shootings in Paterson. However, continued efforts and strategies are necessary to further decrease gun-related crimes in the city.
In conclusion, the recent homicide in Paterson serves as a reminder of the persistent issue of gun violence. While there has been a significant decrease in overall gun crimes this year, the incident underscores the need for sustained efforts and reforms to ensure the safety and security of the city’s residents.
