Hobart Mayoral Candidates Share Same Values, Vow to Improve Community Engagement
HOBART — Two mayoral candidates in Hobart, Josh Huddlestun and Teddian Jackson, may come from different backgrounds, but they share a common love for their community. This was evident during a recent debate hosted by several organizations, including the League of Women Voters and Rise NWI. Both candidates expressed their commitment to improving community engagement and addressing key issues such as economic development, government transparency, and infrastructure improvement.
During the debate, it became apparent that Huddlestun and Jackson have similar priorities for their mayoral campaigns. They both expressed the desire to make local government more accessible and understandable, increase community involvement, and enforce safety regulations for golf cart usage on public roads. Additionally, they both oppose the widening of County Line Road.
Despite being opponents in the mayoral race, Huddlestun and Jackson maintained a friendly demeanor during the debate. Jackson even highlighted their positive relationship outside of the election, saying, I think Hobart wins either way.
Huddlestun, a lifelong Hobart resident and current City Council member, emphasized his intimate knowledge of the city’s government and his experience in revitalizing the downtown area. He outlined three main platforms for his campaign: promoting public safety, fiscal responsibility, and quality of life. Huddlestun plans to establish various committees and councils to address accessibility, sustainability, and technological advancements in city hall. He also wants to allocate a portion of exaction fees to sidewalk replacements.
On the other hand, Jackson, an independent candidate originally from Jamaica, has made significant contributions to the community through his restaurant, Montego Bay Grille. He aims to reduce barriers for businesses locating in Hobart and increase resident involvement in local government. Jackson plans to provide more transparency in the city’s annual budget and update outdated ordinances. He also intends to maintain the natural area of Duck Creek property.
One contentious topic discussed during the debate was the rezoning of 165 acres of land at 61st Avenue and Colorado Street. While Huddlestun expressed opposition to the project, Jackson emphasized the importance of consensus-based governance and involving residents in decision-making processes.
The general election is scheduled for November 7, and residents of Lake County can vote at various polling locations or participate in early voting. Both candidates are eager to serve the community and bring about positive change as Hobart’s next mayor.
