Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Dermatology Department is committed to raising awareness about atopic dermatitis, a common skin condition in Qatar. Throughout September, they will host various activities aimed at educating and informing the public about the challenges of eczema.

Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a condition characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. It can occur at any age but is common in young children. The Dermatology Department at HMC aims to highlight the prevalence of eczema in Qatar and its impact on different age groups.

The awareness activities will take place at three locations within HMC: the Dermatology Department, the Department of Geriatrics in Rumailah, and the Women’s Wellness and Research Center. These activities are designed for the general public, patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in learning about eczema and its management.

The objectives of the awareness activities include raising awareness about the prevalence of eczema in Qatar and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. The specialized Atopic Dermatitis clinic at the Dermatology Department in Rumailah will also be highlighted. Additionally, there will be a focus on addressing the psychological impact of eczema on patients, especially children and adolescents.

Throughout September, a range of activities will be held, including informative sessions, awareness campaigns, discussions, and interactive activities such as digital skin analysis devices. Patients and caregivers will receive education about the disease, its associated psychological effects, and available treatments.

Prof Martin Steinhoff, Chairman of the Dermatology Department, emphasizes the importance of spreading the word about eczema and ensuring that all patients receive adequate treatment. He highlights that eczema is one of the most common dermatological diseases observed at the Dermatology Department in Rumailah Hospital.

The prevalence of eczema in Qatar is estimated to be around 15 to 20% among children, 10% among adolescents, 5% among adults, and 1 to 3% among the elderly population. It is also recognized as the most common pregnancy dermatosis among pregnant women.

The specialized Atopic Dermatitis Clinic at the Dermatology Department-Rumailah provides recently approved treatments aligned with international standards. Patients and caregivers can schedule appointments at the clinic to seek education about the disease and its management.

Dr. Sara Saleh al-Khawaga, a specialist in the Dermatology & Venereology Department at HMC and the lead of the Atopic Dermatitis Awareness Month Organizing Committee, explains that eczema is a chronic condition that can cause discomfort through dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. It is not contagious but may increase the risk of developing food allergies, hay fever, and asthma.

The Dermatology Department at HMC is dedicated to supporting individuals affected by atopic dermatitis in Qatar. By raising awareness, providing specialized care, and educating patients and caregivers, they aim to improve the lives of those living with eczema.
