Young People Living with HIV Plead with Fellow Youths to Take Their Prescription Seriously

A recent study conducted by the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) has revealed that individuals aged below 24 are still struggling with a high viral load, with percentages ranging between 65-75 percent. In light of this concerning finding, young people living with HIV/AIDS have come forward to address the alarming increase in HIV cases among youth in Uganda. Their message is clear: adherence to prescription is vital in order to manage the virus effectively.

Jonathan Mubiru, a young person living with HIV, emphasized the lack of awareness among his peers regarding the purpose of antiretroviral (ARV) medications. Many young individuals take these drugs without fully understanding their significance, often believing that they are simply helping their family members. Mubiru warned against this misconception, stating that failing to take the prescribed medication can lead to severe consequences.

Moreover, Mubiru urged young people to be open about their HIV status with one another, specifically mentioning the importance of sharing this information within sexual relationships. By breaking the stigma and encouraging open communication, it becomes easier to combat the spread of the disease.

Mubiru also called upon the government to involve more young people living with HIV in counseling programs. He believes that by empowering youths to counsel their peers who may be hesitant to disclose their HIV status, the overall support system and understanding can be strengthened.

During a symposium held at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe, Mubiru shared his personal journey, highlighting the importance of accepting one’s HIV status. He emphasized that there is no reason to fear judgment from others, as anyone could find themselves in a similar situation. Mubiru proudly declared that he has been living with HIV for 30 years and that he no longer feels apprehensive about taking his medication, be it in public transportation or any other setting.

Ruth Nassali, a 28-year-old HIV victim, advised youth living with the virus to abstain from consuming alcohol and using narcotic drugs, as these substances can have detrimental effects on their health and overall well-being.

Echoing these sentiments, Edbert Tumutereize, also 28 years old and working with The Aids Support Organization (TASO), emphasized the significance of educating young people about the realities of HIV. Tumutereize believes that the lack of comprehensive knowledge about the virus contributes to the misconceptions and ignorance surrounding it.

The UVRI study’s findings shed light on the urgent need to address the high viral loads among young people in Uganda. By educating and counseling youths, as well as promoting adherence to medication, it is possible to improve their quality of life and reduce the spread of HIV.

It is crucial that the government and other organizations actively involve young people living with HIV in their programs. By providing them with a platform to share their experiences and knowledge, they can play a pivotal role in educating and supporting their peers. Together, they can effectively tackle the rising HIV cases among youth and create a better future for all.

In conclusion, the voices of young people living with HIV/AIDS are a powerful reminder that adherence to prescription and open communication are essential in the fight against HIV. Their experiences serve as a lesson for others, reinforcing the message that today it may be them, but tomorrow it could be anyone else. By working together, the youth of Uganda can conquer this disease and ensure a healthier future for generations to come.
