Hindu extremist groups are threatening two churches in the archdiocese of Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the local cathedral last Easter. One incident involved a group of 20-25 people wearing saffron-coloured scarves and carrying tridents and swords on bicycles and cars who threatened the priest and two Catholics at the church of the St Joseph Vaz Catholic mission in Kherki Daula before giving the congregation two weeks to close the church. The property owner had already asked the archdiocese to vacate the premises due to threats from Hindu radicals. Another incident in Farrukh Nagar involved village leaders questioning the need for a church to serve just seven Catholic families. The architecture of the Trichur, who is also the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, recently met with India’s Home Minister to express his concern over attacks on churches in Delhi and Manipur.
