Himachal Pradesh, India’s apple bowl, has hosted a state-level convention of the Apple Growers Association in Shimla, ahead of the apple season. Apple growers from all over the state gathered to discuss various issues affecting the industry, including the compulsory implementation of the Universal Carton, a strict continuation of the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), and apple pricing strategies. The farmers expect the government to fix the price of A grade apples at ₹80/kg, B grade at ₹60/kg, and C grade at ₹30/kg. The farmers also demand the implementation of the Legal Metrology Act 2009, The APMC ACT 2005, and the HP Passenger and Goods Taxation Act1955. Additionally, they call for the abolition and exemption of GST on carton trays, machines and equipment used in apple farming, and the payment of dues of apples under MIS. Another demand from the growers is the high compensation for the loss caused by natural occurrences such as heavy hailstorms, rain, and untimely snowfall. Given the importance of horticulture to the state’s economy, making a swift review of these demands should be crucial.
