The Himachal Pradesh public works minister, Vikramaditya Singh, recently chaired a meeting to discuss the improvement of roads for the upcoming apple season. The aim is to ensure that orchardists can transport their produce with ease and without any hiccups. Singh has promised that the department will make every effort to address the concerns related to roads and transportation.
The review meeting brought together officers of the PWD and other departments to assess the roads’ condition and plan their improvement. The minister highlighted that 14 roads under Shimla Circle require immediate attention, with an estimated expenditure of approximately ₹3.50 crore. However, if additional funds are necessary, the issue will be taken up with the chief minister. The officers from all circles were directed to work together to complete all patchwork before the start of the apple season.
During the meeting, urgent requirements for the apple season were addressed, including the procurement of JCB machines at the division level. The officials emphasized that the roads in Kotkhai, Chopal, Kotgarh, Kumarsain, and other apple belts need immediate improvements. It was also noted that the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) had released ₹3.48 crore for the road leading to the Parala Market Yard, and 80% of the work has been completed already.
The smooth transportation of apples is crucial for the state’s economy, as the apple season in Himachal Pradesh accounts for 40% of the total produce in India. Therefore, ensuring the perfect condition of the roads for the transportation of the apples is of paramount importance. The state government’s commitment to providing good roads and transportation facilities is expected to be beneficial for both the farmers and the state’s economy.
