Buford High School Senior Makes Miraculous Recovery After Liver Transplant, Scores Touchdown
BUFORD, Ga. – In a heartwarming display of resilience and determination, Buford High School senior Nathaniel Olofintuyi, known as Tuyi, has made an extraordinary recovery after undergoing a life-saving liver transplant. Just days after being cleared to play again, Tuyi caught a touchdown at his senior night football game, leaving his loved ones in awe of his remarkable journey.
Tuyi’s mother, Sophia Jackson, expressed her gratitude, stating, God is good because it’s a miracle. A total miracle. I just started crying. I was overwhelmed with joy that he had the opportunity to do something that he always wanted to do. He did not want to spend his senior year in a hospital bed.
The touchdown, thrown by Buford quarterback Dayton Raiola, contributed to a resounding victory for Buford, with a final score of 62-0 against Central Gwinnett. Raiola expressed his joy at sharing this momentous occasion with Tuyi, saying, I’m glad my first varsity touchdown actually meant something to the person that actually caught it. You know, he conquered life. And my first touchdown went to him, I’m going to remember that forever.
Tuyi’s journey leading up to this triumphant moment has been nothing short of extraordinary. It all began on his birthday, March 14, when he fell ill and was rushed to the ER. Diagnosed with acute liver failure, Tuyi’s life hung in the balance as he was admitted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Facing the devastating reality that Tuyi’s condition was rapidly deteriorating, Jackson recalls the harrowing moment when doctors informed her of the urgency for a liver transplant. She shared, When the surgeon, the hepatologist–CHOA has an amazing liver transplant team and they looked me in my eyes, and said ‘he is dying and if he doesn’t have a liver transplant, he may not live.’ So, those words played in my head and I told my son, and I said look, you will live and not die.
The situation took a miraculous turn when Tuyi received a liver transplant match just one day after being placed on the transplant list. Astonished by the speed of this match, Jackson described it as a miracle and something the physicians had never witnessed before.
On March 31, Tuyi underwent a grueling 12-hour surgery, which proved successful. Over the following months, he embarked on an arduous rehabilitation journey and was eventually granted clearance to return to the football field. Tuyi reflects on his incredible recovery, saying, Considering like six months ago I couldn’t even walk, let alone brush my teeth by myself or go to the bathroom by myself… It doesn’t seem real.
Filled with gratitude, Tuyi acknowledges the role of faith in his recovery, stating, I give all glory to God. Like I couldn’t have done it without him. He shares an uplifting message for others facing adversity, saying, Just believe! Like I know, at times it’s tough… I’m telling you there’s light at the end of the tunnel… I just pray that my miracle can shine light to the world and bring light to the world.
Although Tuyi and his family have yet to meet the liver donor, they hope to do so in the near future. For now, Tuyi remains under continuous medical treatment and will be closely monitored by doctors for the next year. He will also require lifelong anti-rejection medication.
