High Dropout Rates in Odisha, Meghalaya, Bihar, and Assam Highlight Education Challenges
Odisha, Meghalaya, Bihar, and Assam are facing a daunting challenge in their education systems as they grapple with high dropout rates. According to data shared by the ministry of education in the Rajya Sabha, these states have recorded disturbingly high dropout rates at the secondary school level.
At the secondary school level, Odisha stands out with the highest dropout rate of 27.3%. It is closely followed by Meghalaya at 21.7%, Bihar at 20.5%, and Assam at 20.3%. These numbers are significantly higher than the national average dropout rate of 12.6%.
The situation is equally concerning in other states as well. West Bengal, Punjab, Nagaland, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh have dropout rates of over 15%. This data sheds light on the educational challenges faced by these states and calls for immediate attention.
The figures presented in Parliament are derived from the Department of School Education and Literacy’s Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) system. This system is designed to collect data on various indicators of school education from all states and Union Territories.
The data reveals not only the dropout rates at the secondary level but also at the elementary, primary, and upper primary levels. Several states have reported dropout rates exceeding 15% at the secondary school level. Andhra Pradesh stands at 16.3%, Gujarat at 17.9%, Punjab at 17.2%, and West Bengal at 18%.
When it comes to the primary level, Manipur has the highest dropout rate at 13.3%, followed by Meghalaya at 9.8% and Arunachal Pradesh at 9.3%. At the upper primary level, the situation is concerning in Meghalaya with a dropout rate of 10.6%, followed by Assam at 8.8% and Punjab at 8%.
These dropout rates highlight the need for increased efforts to ensure that students stay enrolled in the education system and complete their studies. Education is the foundation for a bright future, and it is crucial to address the factors that contribute to these high dropout rates.
Factors such as poverty, lack of access to quality education, inadequate infrastructure, and societal pressures often lead to students abandoning their education.
