New data has shed light on the streets in St Albans, Harpenden, and Hemel Hempstead that have experienced the highest rates of crime. CrimeRate, a data collection platform, has compiled figures from July 2020 to June 2023, revealing some alarming statistics.
Hemel Hempstead’s Breakspear Way topped the list with 216 recorded offences during the specified period. Following closely behind is Watling Street in St Albans, with 134 crimes reported. Other streets that have seen significant criminal activity include Hatfield Road in St Albans, with 122 recorded crimes, and Church Green in Harpenden, with 101 offences, 90 of which were shoplifting incidents.
Shoplifting seems to be a prevalent problem in Hemel Hempstead, as Stoney Croft recorded 84 cases. On the other hand, Stonecross in St Albans recorded the highest number of violent and sexual offenses, reaching a concerning total of 45 incidents.
In terms of neighborhoods, St Albans Central has emerged with the highest crime rate, standing at 162.8 crimes per 1,000 people. The overall crime rates for the areas are as follows: St Albans with 56.68 crimes per 1,000 people, Harpenden with 42.54, and Hemel Hempstead with 67.39.
A spokesperson for Herts police stated that every crime report is carefully reviewed, with a focus on investigating, making arrests, and ensuring accountability for the perpetrators. They further noted that many of the violent and sexual crimes occur between individuals known to each other, rather than random attacks. Support is provided for all victims, and measures are put in place to protect individuals at risk of domestic abuse or other forms of mistreatment.
The spokesperson also mentioned that although not all reports of anti-social behavior meet the crime threshold, the neighborhood teams work closely with partners to address the concerns of the public and prevent such incidents from reoccurring. The Herts police website (www.herts.police.uk) offers free advice on crime prevention for those looking to safeguard themselves and their property.
It is crucial to address the issue of high crime rates in these areas and take appropriate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents. By working collaboratively with the community, law enforcement, and support services, it is hoped that a significant reduction in crime can be achieved.
