Hialeah firefighters in Florida had an unexpected delivery when a woman went into labor and arrived at their fire station. Jose and Jackie Cerna found themselves in a rush when Jackie’s water broke at home. Rather than face the traffic during rush hour to reach the birthing center, the couple decided to head to their local fire station instead. The incident occurred last Tuesday at Hialeah Fire Station No. 9.

First responders, including Luis Fuentes and Capt. Alex Castillo, immediately sprang into action when the couple arrived at the fire station’s parking lot. Fuentes expressed that while they are usually the ones going to a scene, this time, the scene came to them.

Jackie Cerna explained that she was experiencing contractions and feeling sick in the early morning. Knowing that time was running out, she got into the car, but it became evident within minutes that they wouldn’t make it to their intended destination. Baby James Cerna was eager to make his grand entrance into the world, later described by Jackie as a fast and furious birth.

Both Fuentes and Castillo had assisted with births before, but this was their first time witnessing a child being delivered from inside a vehicle that had pulled up to their station. Castillo emphasized that the mother deserves the most credit for her hard work, and they were simply using their skills and knowledge to help her deliver the baby safely.

Reflecting on the experience, Castillo expressed how amazing it was to witness the miracle of life and hold baby James in their hands. He added that everyone left the parking lot with smiles on their faces. Fuentes and Castillo visited the Cerna family, who had received further medical attention at the hospital after the delivery, to bring them a gift and see how they were doing.

The firefighters’ actions exemplify the diverse roles they fulfill, going beyond fighting fires and responding to hazardous situations. Bringing attention to the extraordinary event that occurred in a parking lot serves as an example of their dedication and the positive impact they have on their community.

The birth of baby James was an unforgettable experience for the Hialeah firefighters. They showcased their professionalism and compassion, highlighting the vital role they play in their community. Such exceptional events remind us of the humanity and heroism displayed by first responders on a daily basis.
