Heavy Rainfall in Odisha Causes Flooding and Loss of Fish, IMD Predicts More Downpour
Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in several parts of Odisha, leading to flooding and causing a significant loss to the local fisheries industry. Ponds operated by the fisheries department got inundated due to continuous rain, resulting in fish being swept away. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the rainfall will continue over the next 24 hours, with heavy to very heavy downpour expected in West Odisha districts, while the coastal districts will experience moderate rainfall.
The Boudh area in Odisha witnessed the adverse impacts of heavy rainfall, as locals were spotted catching fish on the inundated National Highway 57. Fisheries Officer, Lipsa Pattnaik, reported a loss of approximately Rs 9 lakhs due to around two tonnes of fish being washed away.
According to the IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, and is likely to further intensify into a deep depression. The depression is anticipated to move northwestward and cross the Bangladesh coast near Khepupara, followed by a west-northwestward trajectory across Gangetic West Bengal in the next 24 hours.
