Heavy Tourist Rush at Sinhagad Fort Causes 5-Hour Traffic Snarls

The onset of the monsoon season has led to a significant influx of tourists at Sinhagad fort, resulting in traffic congestion and long delays for travelers. Popular tourist destinations such as Panshet dam and Khadakwasla dam chowpatty have also experienced heavy footfall, contributing to the traffic snarls.

Since Sunday morning, there have been extensive lines of vehicles and traffic jams stretching from the Khandakwasla reservoir all the way to the top of Sinhagad fort. The surge in visitors has overwhelmed the infrastructure, causing immense frustration, especially for those trying to navigate through the ghat section.

Amol Pol, a travel enthusiast who recently visited Sinhagad fort with his family, expressed his disappointment at being stuck in traffic for over five hours. According to Pol, they attempted to descend from the fort to the Khadakwasla dam chowpatty between 11 am and 4 pm but were unable to do so due to the slow-moving vehicles and narrow roads.

The forest department has reported a significant increase in tourist numbers at Sinhagad fort over the last month, particularly on weekends. With the onset of the monsoon, the footfall has steadily risen each weekend in June. This Sunday, the historic monument witnessed a substantial number of visitors, with 1,961 two-wheelers and 495 four-wheelers making their way to the fort’s peak.

The heavy traffic congestion prompted the forest department to implement traffic management measures. Vehicles were allowed to move in slots to ease the situation, and volunteers were stationed at various points to guide and clear the vehicles. Additionally, some vehicles were diverted via Kondhanpur Road to alleviate the pressure on the ghat section.

Due to the sheer number of tourists flocking to Sinhagad fort on Sunday, traffic congestion persisted for a duration of 5-6 hours in the regions near Khadakwasla dam, Donje village, and the ghat area of Sinhagad fort.

In conclusion, the heavy rush of tourists to Sinhagad fort and nearby attractions has resulted in severe traffic congestion and long delays for travelers. The forest department is taking measures to manage the situation and mitigate the impact on visitors. As tourist numbers continue to rise, it is essential for authorities to address the infrastructure challenges to ensure a smoother and more enjoyable experience for all those visiting these popular destinations.
