Medical experts express concern over health condition of 41 workers trapped in Silkyara tunnel

A total of 41 workers have been trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel, located between Silkyara to Barkot, for the past 12 days. The workers became trapped when a section of the under-construction tunnel collapsed on November 12, burying them in debris on the Silkyara side. Medical experts are now expressing concern about the health condition of the trapped workers.

Jugal Kishore, a Community Medicine specialist at Safdarjung Hospital, highlighted the physical and mental challenges faced by individuals trapped in such situations. He explained that extreme cold could lead to frostbite and hypothermia, but he believed the temperature inside the tunnel would be relatively stable. However, the lack of access to food and water for an extended period could lead to electrolyte imbalances, making it difficult for the trapped workers to walk or understand things. Dehydration is also a significant risk due to the extended duration of the ordeal, with Kishore noting that prolonged confinement weakens the body’s muscles, making even walking a challenge.

Kishore also emphasized the potential physiological effects of being trapped in darkness for an extended period. He indicated that the workers might develop photophobia or fear of light when they are finally rescued. In terms of medical intervention, Kishore mentioned the possible need for a chest specialist due to the enclosed and confined environment, which could potentially reduce oxygen levels and increase carbon dioxide levels, affecting cognitive function and the carrying capacity of hemoglobin, a protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood.

Addressing the mental well-being of the trapped workers, Dinesh Kataria, a psychiatrist from Lady Hardinge Hospital, highlighted the importance of reassurance. He emphasized that establishing communication with the workers and providing reassurance would significantly improve their mental condition. Kataria also mentioned that while the likelihood of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was low, sleep problems and depression could be expected. He confirmed that the workers were receiving minimum life support items and ongoing psychological support.

The rescue operation, likened to a war by Lt General (Rtd) Syed Ata Hasnain of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is progressing with unpredictable timelines. Rescuers are utilizing an American auger machine to drill through the debris blocking the Silkyara side of the tunnel. As of Wednesday night, they had managed to drill through 45 meters of the 60-meter stretch.

A total of 41 ambulances, including 31 from the ‘108’ service and 10 provided by the administration, are stationed at the Silkyara tunnel site. This ensures immediate medical assistance is available once the workers are successfully rescued.

The situation remains critical, with the trapped workers enduring physical and mental strain for an extended period. Medical experts and rescue teams are working tirelessly to ensure their well-being throughout this ordeal.
