Harvey Weinstein appears in New York Court after overturned conviction
New York [US], May 2 (ANI): Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein appeared in court in New York for the first time since his 2020 rape conviction was overturned. Weinstein was seated in a wheelchair and wheeled by a security guard into a courtroom packed with journalists, lawyers, and other officials. Lawyer Gloria Allred and Weinstein accuser Jessica Mann were present in the room. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed they will seek a retrial in the fall.
[Mann] wants everyone to know the truth, and the defendant may have power and privilege, but she has the truth, said prosecutor Nicole Blumberg. Attorney Arthur Aidala, representing Weinstein, expressed confidence in a speedy trial and Weinstein’s eventual acquittal. The judge scheduled a discovery hearing for May 29. Last week, the New York State Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s conviction, citing the judge’s prejudicial rulings. Weinstein’s lawyers are also appealing his Los Angeles conviction.
Weinstein, who has been imprisoned at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome, N.Y., was transferred to Bellevue Hospital over the weekend for health problems. Despite various health issues, Weinstein’s mental abilities are deemed sufficient for his defense. In February 2020, Weinstein was convicted on criminal sexual assault and rape charges and sentenced to 23 years in prison. (ANI)
